EN 9: Reminders from May 30 2012

Today students began with some paragraph practice.

We discussed five ways to organize a paragraph:
chronological
emphatic
cause and effect
spatial
compare and contrast

Students then created their own paragraph using one of these organizational strategies.

When students competed this task, they had a chance to finish their poetry projects.

Today students had a chance to catch up on incomplete work.

Students need to make sure that they caught up, as final marks will soon be submitted.

Today students completed a practice grammar exercise.

We then went over the written portion of the provincial exam.

Students were to create an opening paragraph (5-6 sentences) and then a topic sentence for each of the subsequent paragraphs, plus a sentence for which to conclude.

The given topic:

Our toughest struggles in life can be with ourselves.

Students then either completed their newspapers or began the gold rush exercise.

EN 10: Reminders from May 28

Today students listened to and read along with the Eagles' song, Hotel California.

Students then wrote a persuasive paragraph outlining what the song means.

Finally, students completed some provincial practice.

Students began with a grammar practice quiz.

After marking this together, students read eight paragraphs and decided each paragraph's point of view.

Finally, students completed their poetry projects.  If these were not completed in class, they are for homework and due on Wednesday, May 30 2012.

SS 10: Reminders from May 24 2012

Today we began by taking notes on The Oregon Territory Dispute.  Students can see me for notes.

Students then completed Exercise 2.

Students had the rest of the class to complete their newspapers.  I will give one more class to complete this task.

Today students began by practicing subject-verb agreements.  Next, we reviewed point of view and completed an exercise in groups.  Students finished the class by writing a short narrative in either first, second, or third point of view.

SS 7: Reminders from May 23 2012

Today students worked on their Greek Power Point Presentations.

Today students began by writing a response to the question, what is a reputation?  Why is a reputation important... or is it?  Describe your reputation and consider how your reputation may have impacted people's responses to you.

We then read our writings aloud in small groups.

Students then finished watching The Crucible.

Today students began with subject-verb agreement practice.

We then read our prepared poems aloud to the class.

After, students studied point of view and had a chance to practice their p.o.v. recognition.

Finally, students began their poetry projects.  These will be due in two classes (Monday May 28 2012).

SS 10: Reminders from May 22 2012

Today we began class by taking notes on Residential Schools.  Please see me or Ursula for notes.

Students then continued with their newspaper projects.

Make sure to read pages 73-76 (Part B) in the Student Handbook.  There will be a timed open book quiz on pages 73-74, so make sure to pay close attention to that particular information.

EN 10: Reminders from May 22 2012

Today students practiced paragraph form.  We looked at five different ways in which to create a flowing sequence within a paragraph:
chronological
emphatic
cause and effect
compare and contrast
spatial

Students then looked at sample paragraphs and identified each topic sentence, the topic, transition words, sentences that did not fit the topic, and the type of paragraph sequence used.

Next, students studied the painting, Examination of a Witch by T H Matteson (1853).



Students wrote for fifteen minutes on the following matter:

Discuss this picture in relation to the play, The Crucible.

Finally, students watched a further section of the movie, The Crucible.

Today students continued working on their newspaper projects.  I will provide forty minutes of class time and then will expect to collect the newspapers.

EN 10: Reminders from May 16 2012

Today students began by taking notes on understanding sound and effects in poetry.

Students read Lord Byron's On This Day I Complete My Thirty-Sixth Year and we found samples of poetic sound effects, as well as other poetic devices.

Finally, students either finished their McCarthy/Crucible essays or found a song to analyze next class. Students must have a song for tomorrow's class.

EN 9: Reminders from May 16 2012

Today students reviewed poetic devices.

Students then read their prepared poems, if they desired to do so.

Next, we read part one of Coleridge's Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and provided some analysis.

Finally, students chose a picture and began creating a descriptive poem using at least four poetic devices.  This poem will be due next class (Wednesday, May  23).

Today students took notes on allegory and McCarthyism.  Students should see me if they missed the notes.

Students then had thirty minutes to investigate McCarthyism on their own.

Students began an outline for their next essay:

We will have one more class to write this essay.


EN 9: Reminders from May 14 2012

Today students began the class by journaling.  We then reviewed poetic devices.

Students read three poems:

An Old Time See-Flight by Walt Whitman
The Sea Gipsy by Richard Hovey
The Shell by James Stephens

Students were then charged with the task of writing their own poem.  This poem must have at least three poetic devices and they must be clearly outlined.  This poem is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

SS 10: Reminders from May 10, 2012

Students began with a quiz on everything we have studied thus far in the chapter.

We then finished our notes on Rebellion to Trial.  Students completed a quick fill-in-the-blank sheet on Louis Riel's trial and then began our newspaper project.  Students will have three classes to complete this task.

EN 10: Reminders from May 9, 2012

Today students chose a short selection from the play, The Crucible, and in groups began rehearsing their drama presentation.  Students will have thirty minutes tomorrow to rehearse and will be expected to perform their selection on Friday.

Next, students reviewed adjectives.

Finally, the class was read a passage from one of the previous provincial exams and then completed the attached questions.  We then took up the answers together.

EN 10: Reminders from May 8 2012

Today students wrote a draft paragraph, discussing instances of pride in the play, The Crucible.

Students should make sure they have a google documents account by next class.

Today students began by taking notes on the Northwest Rebellion.  We then read pages 82-85 in the handbook as a class.  Students then had the opportunity to fill in Exercise 10 (the five battles considered the Northwest Rebellion) in small groups.

Today we read pages 114-115 in the text book.  Students then completed #2 and #4 (#4 was handed in and will be marked out of 12... students should consider SPERMG and find two samples for each).

EN 10: Reminders from May 7 2012

Today students completed the play, The Crucible.  Students then watched a teacher edit of four student paragraphs.
Next, students discussed the use of pride in the play:

  • refusal to admit witchcraft
  • John doesn't want his name shown on the church door
  • Elizabeth doesn't admit that her husband is a lecher
  • Hale returns to Salem through guilt
  • Abigail, at first, denies her naughty behaviour in the woods
  • Abigail claims that her name is still good in the town
Finally, students wrote a topic sentence to start them off for tomorrow's class, where we will write a full paragraph on instances of pride in The Crucible.

EN 9: Reminders from May 7 2012

Today students began with a journal write.  We then practiced our use of they're, there, and their.  Next, students reviewed story elements and plot diagrams.  Finally, we read a short story, "The Fun They Had," and students created a plot diagram.

There will be a quiz next class on the use of they're, there, and their, as well as sentence fragments.

Today we discussed the many grudges held in The Crucible.

Students looked at the following pairs:

  • Abby vs Elizabeth
  • Putnam vs Proctor
  • Elizabeth vs John
  • Martha Corey vs Walcott
  • Mrs Putnam vs Rebecca Nurse
  • Parris vs John Proctor


Finally students answered the following question in paragraph form, using at least one quotation to back up their argument:

Discuss the role that grudges and personal rivalries play in the witch trial hysteria.

Students handed this in at the end of class.

SS 7: Reminders from May 2 2012

Today students read though pages 110-113 in the textbook.  We then completed number two on p.113 in a chart format.  This was collected and will be marked.  Please make sure this assignment is handed in to me.

Today students expanded their vocabulary by finding definitions for ten unknown (or unfamiliar) words from The Crucible.

We then read through more of The Crucible and finished act three.

Finally, students wrote a short summary of events and characters up to this point in the play.

Today we began with our sentence fragment and conjunctions quiz.  Students did well!

Students then discussed "con-artistry" and we looked to our devious sides for ideas.  Students will consider a scam so that they may write a persuasive paragraph next class.

SS 10: Reminders from May 1 2012

We began the class by watching the following short documentary:

Students then looked at a variety of political cartoons.  We analyzed each cartoon and then students spent the rest of the class writing their own political cartoon.  We will finish these up next class.

Today we completed our presentations on witchcraft from yesterday in our four groups:

  • doctors
  • lawyers
  • social workers
  • occult specialists


We then categorized nine quotations into three themes:

  1. lies and deceit
  2. witchcraft
  3. revenge/jealousy


Finally, we began reading Act 3 of The Crucible.  We reached page 97.
