EN 10: Reminders from April 30 2012

Today students read to the end of Act 2 in The Crucible.

When finished, students got into groups from which to address the concept of witchcraft.  Each group is responsible for providing evidence either proving or disproving the validity of witchcraft, but must be done so in their specific style.

Group Styles:
Doctors
Lawyers
Social Workers
Occult Leaders

Students will present their findings tomorrow.

EN 9: Reminders from April 30 2012

Today students began by watching the following link on youtube:

They then completed Exercise 55 on conjunctions.

Next, students had more sentence fragment recognition practice.  We will have a sentence fragment quiz coming up this Wednesday. (we will have a short review ahead of the quiz)

Students then had some time to write in their journals.

Finally, I read Roald Dahl's short story, The Wish, aloud to the class.

EN 10: Reminders from April 27 2012

Today students created court cases and then were tried and convicted in the Courtroom of MacInnes!

Students provided some comical role-plays and we learned that often, court cases could be avoided if both parties could act in a mature manner and discuss a resolution.

Today students shared their narratives with the class.  Students were very brave and expressive in their readings.  I'm so proud of their accomplishments!

SS 10: Reminders from April 26 2012

Today students completed a quiz on:

  • The Lead Up to the Northwest Rebellion
  • The Northwest Mounted Police
  • The Indian Act

Students then took notes on the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) and the National Policy.

Finally, students completed question #8 on p.192 in the Horizons textbook.


EN 10: Reminders from April 26 2012

Today students created a "witch's chant" and performed this in front of the class.  These were all well done and had some clever components!

Students then read up to p.62 in The Crucible.

EN 10: Reminders from April 25 2012

Today students completed Act 1 of The Crucible.

We then watched a short documentary on the Salem witch trials:

Students finished the class by writing a short journal entry (much in the style of journal entries completed for Of Mice and Men).

EN 9: Reminders from April 25 2012

Today we worked on sentence fragments.  Students underlined sentences, showing the subject and predicate.  Students then worked on their narrative stories.  Good copies will be read on Friday.

If students do not wish to share their own stories, they may choose another story to read aloud.

Don't forget to bring fruit or other healthy snacks on Friday morning!

Today students completed their study of Treaty 2.  We then read p. 142-143 in the Handbook and students collaborated and completed a short assignment.  Finally, students looked over their notes in preparation for their upcoming quiz/test (or quest).

Today students worked through more of Verb Exercise 31 and we then took up half of it together.

Students then listened to David Lubar's story Apparent Motives.

Finally, students began writing a narrative story.

Today we took notes on the North West Mounted Police and Treaties.

Students then worked on a handout detailing aspects of the BC Treaty Commission.

Today students began by discussing two controversial topics: school uniforms and gender segregated schools.

We then looked at examples of persuasive writing.  Students then wrote a persuasive paragraph on one of the topics discussed in class, or on one of their choosing.

When complete, students worked on Verb Exercise 31.

Students MUST hand in their countries as soon as possible.

Students will have a quiz on Egypt next class.  They must recall as many facts (up to 15) and know the acronym SPERMG.

Today we worked on essay outlines for the novel Of Mice and Men.

The expectation is that the essay will have five paragraphs:

Opening Paragraph with a Thesis Statement
Three Body Paragraphs with at least one quotation each.
Concluding Paragraph


Students will begin writing their essays tomorrow.

Today students wrote their chapter four unit test.  I will hold a make-up test for those students who were not present.

Please read p.80-81 in the green handbook (A & B) and p.172-176 in Horizons.

Today students discussed sample student essays provided by the Ministry of Education.  Students were provided a rubric and asked to assess the sample essays.  After students completed the task, we then went over the ministry's designation of each essay.

Next, the last group presented their powerpoint presentation from yesterday.

Finally, students were given an outline for which to begin creating their essays on ONE of the following topics:

A) Discuss John Steinbeck's use of figurative language and poetic devices in Of Mice and Men.

B) Discuss the themes and key issues in John Steinbeck's novella Of Mice and Men.

Today we continued on with verbs; students completed Exercise 30 and then we marked it as a class.

I then edited four student paragraphs in front of the class.  Students watched and then edited a paragraph from one of their peers.

Finally, students watched the magic apple peeler demonstration and then wrote an expository paragraph on how the machine works.

Today students read for the class.  The novella, Of Mice and Men, must be completed by the end of tomorrow's class.

Today we started with notes on the Confederation of PEI.  Students then watched a short documentary on Louis Riel and the Red River Rebellion.

Next, we marked the Metis Mishmash as a class.

Finally, students were given a review package for Chapter Four.  We will have the test upon our return next Thursday, April 12.  Please see me about getting a review package if you were absent today.

We began the class by reviewing pronouns.  We watched the clip below:

Students then watched me edit a paragraph.

We then watched the clip from which the paragraph was based (start at about 15 min)

Students were then each provided with a paragraph and asked to edit this paragraph.  Students were to pay particular attention to:
1) run-on sentences
2) sentence fragments
3) descriptive language
4) the five senses

Students finished with a worksheet identifying sentence fragments.

Today in English, students continued on with reading Of Mice and Men.  Students then wrote a descriptive paragraph on one of the scenes from the novel.  This was due at the end of class.
