Reminders from June 6 2012
Today students began with integrated quotation practice. Students were required to incorporate five quotations into their own responses to five questions.
Next, students began reading Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game. Students read all but the last two pages in class and are required to complete the rest for homework. We will begin a related assignment in class tomorrow.

EN 10: Reminders from June 5 2012
Today students began by completing the task from last day:
Choose four comprehension questions from the handout attached to the story, The Lottery. Students must incorporate a quotation from Shirley Jackson's story into their own response. Each quotation must have no more than four words.

EN 10: Reminders from June 4 2012
Today students began by writing what they might do if they won the lottery. We then shared some of the ideas.
Next, we compiled a list of various lotteries.
Then, we read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Students then answered comprehension questions in groups. Students will choose four of the questions and answer them in full sentences, finding quotations to back up their ideas. Students may only use four words in each quotation!

Today students read the short story, The Interlopers. Students then answered the questions in the book. Finally, students wrote an acrostic poem using the word "ironic" and related components of both The Interlopers and The Sniper.

We then went over the written portion of the provincial exam.

Today students practiced paragraph form. We looked at five different ways in which to create a flowing sequence within a paragraph:

emphatic
cause and effect
compare and contrast
spatial
Students then looked at sample paragraphs and identified each topic sentence, the topic, transition words, sentences that did not fit the topic, and the type of paragraph sequence used.
Next, students studied the painting, Examination of a Witch by T H Matteson (1853).
Students wrote for fifteen minutes on the following matter:
Discuss this picture in relation to the play, The Crucible.
Finally, students watched a further section of the movie, The Crucible.

Today students began by taking notes on understanding sound and effects in poetry.
Students read Lord Byron's On This Day I Complete My Thirty-Sixth Year and we found samples of poetic sound effects, as well as other poetic devices.
Finally, students either finished their McCarthy/Crucible essays or found a song to analyze next class. Students must have a song for tomorrow's class.

Today students chose a short selection from the play, The Crucible, and in groups began rehearsing their drama presentation. Students will have thirty minutes tomorrow to rehearse and will be expected to perform their selection on Friday.
