SS 10: Reminders from Tuesday, November 22 2011

Today we began by checking the completion of Exercise 13 from the handbook.  Students then used this information, as well as any other relevant information from their notes, to choose which proposals they would put forward in our Quebec Conference simulation and why.

Any students who missed today's class will have to make sure they are present on Thursday, November 24 for the simulation conference, as your participation is an integral component of this unit.

We then continued with the movie, John A: Birth of a Country.

Please make sure that you have your arguments prepared for the conference next class.

Today, after our journal write, we reviewed A Midsummer Night's Dream.  First, we checked over the pink handout completed with the TOC from Wednesday.  Next, students then had class time to rehearse their lines.

Today we completed Act IV questions from A Midsummer Night's Dream.  We have also now finished the book, so please make sure that you are all caught up.

Students were given a project today.  Everyone is to memorize 20 lines from the play and present them to me by Wednesday November 30th.  Students may work on their own or in groups.

SS 10: Reminders from Tuesday, November 1 2011

Today students completed a quiz on the forces leading to confederation, as well as the fathers of confederation.

Students have until Thursday to present their slide-show presentations.  After this, you will not be awarded presentation marks for the assignment.

We began Exercise 13 out of the handbook.  Students will have some time next class to complete this assignment.

We will have another quiz next class on the same topic as today... make sure to study your papas!

Happy Halloween!!

Today we completed an in-class write.  Those students away this last week had the opportunity to use this time to either write their descriptive paragraph, or make-up the their missed quiz.

Descriptive Paragraph: Describe what the forest in A Midsummer Night's Dream looks like.

(You may choose the perspective with which to write.  One student used this as a topic sentence: Being a tree in this fairy-filled forest sucks!)

We then finished reading through Act II of A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Students should study for their test next class on the characters from the play.

Today we had a 20 minute free write.  Students then completed a quiz (placing the events in correct sequence) on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

We then discussed a number of quotations in context from Act I.  We finished by reading through the first part of Act II, Scene 1.

Students who were away at the retreat can see me for their handouts.

Don't forget about the quiz this Wednesday, October 26 on the quotations from Act I.

Today we had a journal write.  We then divided  into groups and discussed different types of attributes that might cause us to feel "love."  Students distinguished between different physical and personality traits that revolve around this emotion.

Students then shared their thoughts to the class.  We then began the first act in A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare.

Today we began a new unit.  Miss Davies, our student teacher, went over life in Victorian times.  We attempted a Victorian parlour game and tried to lift ourselves using one arm (an impossible task!).

We then chose a Victorian topic and began to create a power point presentation for which to present to the class.

Today, after you have finished your test, you will have an opportunity to address our unit one artifact:



Feel free to get up and have a look at it.  Make sure that you name the artifact in your entry and discuss how it would have been important and useful in Canada during the early 1800s.  Your entry will be evaluated on the amount of historical and geographical content to which you can connect the artifact.

Please you make sure to include your first name with your comment (and last initial if you share a name).  The school expectations are a given here, so make sure that your comment is appropriate and that you are a good ambassador.

Today we completed our first official in class write.  Students' writing will be assessed and feedback will be provided to them to better enhance their writing process.

Everyone was asked to choose one of the following topics from John Steinbeck's novel, The Pearl.

1) Discuss theme in John Steinbeck's novel, The Pearl.

(class struggle - rich vs poor)

2) Discuss symbolism in John Steinbeck's novel, The Pearl.

(the pearl)
(the canoe)
(the scorpion)

The paragraph must:
a) be at least 6 sentences
b) have a strong topic sentence
c) have 1 integrated quotation
d) have capital letters and punctuation

En 9: Reminders from Friday September 30, 2011

Today we finished The Pearl.  Students then created and acted out short scenes that would be relevant if creating a movie preview for the story.  Discussions surrounding the themes and symbols of the story were very telling today.  Most people agreed that Kino was selfish by wanting more for the pearl, but I wonder how many of them really wouldn't want the same.

We finished by beginning a review, as our unit test will take place Monday, October 10 2011.

If you need to re-read (or read) the novel, please take the next couple of weekends to do so.

SS 10: Reminders from Thursday, September 29 2011

Today we completed a short quiz on everything we have studied so far.  We then took notes on events leading up to and including the Durham Report.  Students should know the chart that represents responsible government, as you will have a pop quiz on this Tuesday.

We finished by watching Canada: A People's History (Rebellion and Reform).  During this video, we reenacted a few scenes that were relevant to our field of study.

Students will want to make sure that they have read p.50-56 in the green handbook.

SS 10: Reminders from Tuesday, September 27 2011

Today we did a homework check (the green sheet from the handbook).  We then completed a quiz on the early Colonial Government of Canada.  Students then clustered into groups, one the wealthy pioneers who formed an oligarchy government and three poor groups, who comprised lists of grievances.  Students then shared their thoughts with the class as a whole.

We took a few notes on the 1837 Rebellions, but will complete these next day.

Students will have a quiz on everything we have covered so far this term next class... please be prepared!

Band Camp 2011

This year, band camp will occur on October 28-29 at the YMCA Camp Elphinstone.  Information and permission forms will be sent home with students on Tuesday September 27th.  Please make sure that forms and money are returned to the office by Thursday October 13th at the absolute latest.

En 9: Reminders from Friday September 23, 2011

Today we had our first class "tea and read" and it served as a great learning opportunity for all!  Just over half of the class performed their interviews and I was very happy with many of them.  Students remembered to stay in character and had well thought-out, interesting, insightful responses.  Thanks to those who put in the extra effort.

For next time, I would ask that all students bring mugs if they would like to participate in drinking tea or hot chocolate.

SS 10: Reminders from Thursday, September 22 2011

To begin, students completed a quiz on The Immigrant Experience.  After, we read p.35-39 as a class and then completed exercise #4 from the Handbook.  Students then took notes on Canada's early colonial government.

Exercise #4 is for homework and will be checked and there will be a quiz next day on the Colonial Government of Canada.

Today we read chapter five from The Pearl.  We discussed and focused on the characteristics of a literary hero.  Ms Dornbeirer and I demonstrated what we are looking for when you present your interviews next class.  Finally, in small groups, students completed comprehension questions on chapter five.

Today we started with an in-class write on the social media presentation we had at the school on Thursday, September 15 2011.  We discussed how we use social media in our own lives, both wisely and unwisely.  Students must make sure that they complete this journal entry, as it is part of their HACE mark.

After the class write, students completed a quiz from chapters 1-4 of The Pearl.  Students then began their role-play exercise.  These interviews will be presented on Friday during our tea house.

Lastly, we began reading chapter five of The Pearl.  Please be aware that our unit test on the Pearl will take place on Friday, September 30 2011.  Make sure that you have read all of the chapters up to chapter five.

SS 10: Reminders from Friday, September 16 2011

Today we began by prioritizing past events that have led to Canadian nationalism.  Next, notes were taken outlining life in Upper Canada in the early 19th Century.  We then spent some time considering and writing about our simulated plots of land and how we might begin creating a homestead.  Finally we watched one clip from Canada: A People's History and answered questions.

At the end of the class, I collected the homestead paragraphs and assigned a reading from Horizons, p.23-32.  There will be a quiz on Tuesday on life in Upper Canada.

Today we reviewed important course content from Grade 9 Social Studies.  Students will be responsible for ensuring that they are aware of the following events:

1) The founding of HBC
2) The Seven Year's War
3) The Treaty of Paris
4) The Royal Proclamation
5) The Boston Tea Party
6) The Quebec Act
7) The Constitutional Act
8) The War of 1812

We will continue watching the historical media we began last class and then begin our Social Studies 10 curriculum, along with the introduction of our first artifact.

It was so lovely to see everyone fresh faced and and ready to learn!!

Today we reviewed the geography of Canada, complete with mapping the provinces/territories and the physiographic regions.  It is important that you know where each of the maritime provinces is located.

Please remember to come to class with both your textbook and handbook on Tuesday, when we next have class.  Please also remember that we will be moving at a quick pace and so keeping up to date with your readings is imperative.

This was handed in at the end of class and will be assessed.

This year we created rubrics to help make writing expectations clear and concrete.  Students, in the past, have been graded on what is called the six-point scale, where a teacher gives a mark out of six and some feedback.  I would like to know how you have felt about having your writing assessed using a rubric with feedback, as opposed to being given a mark.  How does the rubric help you to become a better writer?   Please post your feedback on the blog.

EN 9: Reminders from Monday May 9

Today we discussed metacognition: the ability to think about your thinking!  We discussed "how poetry is relevant to our world."  We took notes on poetic devices and then students continued on creating their slam poems.

EN 8: Reminders from Monday May 9

Today we completed a 30-minute journal write.  Any students who had not finished their Outsiders unit test had time during the journal write to do so.

We then looked at the ballad, The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes and analyzed the rhyme scheme.  Feel free to google the poem and listen to Loreena McKennitt sing the ballad on youtube.

Sr Band: Let's get our energy up!

Dear Band,

I've noticed, since our return from Disneyland, that our energy has been low in rehearsal.  Let's remember that we still have a concert left to perform and one that is most important.  It is for the parents and the community members that made our trip possible.  We need to make sure we impress these invaluable people!

Four weeks to concert date, means eight more rehearsals.  Let's give it our all!

Intermediate Choir Students

Dear Choir,

Your performance at the music festival was wonderful.  Your smiles brightened the room and I want to thank each of you for learning your music and lyrics.  I will look forward to leading you at the Parent's Appreciation Tea coming up at the end of May.

Also, a huge thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to drive the students to the performance.  Without your help we would not have been able to participate.  It takes a special person to give so much.

Today we watched the rest of the lecture given by Dr David Suzuki.  Students are responsible for providing a response to the following prompt:

EN 8: Reminders from Thursday April 28

Thank you for your concentration in class today.  You need to make sure that you know the difference between "biography" and "autobiography," as well as complete your autobiographical poem.  A few of you forgot to hand this in to me at the end of class.  Remember the elements of story plot (specifically the different types of conflict) with regard to The Outsiders.  You will need to explain the relationship between the activating circumstance and the conflict.

You will have your unit test on The Outsiders this coming week on Wednesday May 3rd, 2011, so make sure that you have re-read the book!

Make sure you have read The Outsiders in full.  You will want to go over your notes regarding elements of plot to ensure that you have the needed background knowledge for next class.  Remember: the activating circumstance sets up the conflict, the climax resolves the conflict.  If you missed the quiz today, see me about making it up.
