SS 10: Student Blog Response for Lesson on May 5

Today we watched the rest of the lecture given by Dr David Suzuki.  Students are responsible for providing a response to the following prompt:

Knowing what you know about the way an economy works and having listened to the lecture by Dr David Suzuki, discuss the planet's ability to sustain steady economic growth.

Please make sure to place your first name at the bottom of the response.

  1. Brianna's opinion on the planet's ability to sustain steady economic growth is sour because we can't continually take things from the earth. It can only sustain us for so long. Yes it is ongoing and growing, but so is our population. Trees, animals and all our other resources are always growing, but babies grow twice as fast. By the time we need our earths resources for our newborns, there won't be an earth left. If you catch my drift...

  2. We rely on the earth to live on, eat and many other of are needs. if we use it for other things that destroy it it is not going to be to help us out any longer everything will be gone. People wont be able to meet there needs there will be no plants to make houses, no food to produce and no water or liquids to drink. DR David Suzuki is absolutly right we probably wont be able to live if we keep destroying our planet.

  3. I don't think that we could continue on the same path that we are on with the constantly growing economy and population we have on Earth today. This is because there is no way to know how the environment will end up changing in the future with all of our pollution and choice of lifestyle. If the environment became unfit for simply oxygen to breath or for the plants to grow then we would no longer be able to sustain life. Therefore we need to find a way to preserve what we have more efficiently and give our planets resources time to replenish themselves.

  4. I think we should be wary of how much we take from the earth. I believe the economy wouldn't exist without resources from the earth that we produce, distribute and consume. If we are indeed the species that is able to think about the future, it shouldn't be difficult to see how we are impacting the earth....Charlotte

  5. I think that the world will soon become uninhabitable and the human race will slowly die out. So no i don't think the planet can sustain the economy. If we cant sustain the earth how could it sustain us. PS i find this subject very depressing.

  6. I think that the earth cannot continue to sustain our economy in its current state. Our politicians do not consider the year's economy to be successful unless it has grown. Growth has become the definition of progress. However, at the rate we are going, we are almost positive to decimate our planet's resources within a few decades. Nothing can grow forever but somehow we choose to believe that our economy can continue to grow without any consequences. :O Dun Dun Duh!

  7. I do believe we are heading towards a downward spiral in life as the resources deplete and we wont survive unless our need for stuff disapates and we dont stop polluting the planet. I also do believe the economy is bad as it makes us slaves to it in its never ending hunger of resources THAT or we go populate another planet and dont strip mine it for resources. nate

  8. We as humans think the economy needs to grow, grow and grow. When we should be thinking about how to make the economy work and not focus on the growth. We will take from our earth till there is nothing left, but it all come down to what our needs our which is our earth and everything on it. We worship our economy, but when it get in the way of our life line we need to find another solution. Dr. David Suzuki is right when he says the economy is a lie. Almost every person in this time of our world isn't worried about survival, they are worried about the shoes they wear and the new devices they carry. In order to keep up with the rate our world is moving we must slow down!

  9. Yes.I think we could run out of resources because the population is still growing more and we could run out of those resources but on the other hand we could still reproduce the stuff we have today such as lumber and crops.

  10. I don't think the earth is going to be able to support our growing economy for much longer because we are always going to reproduce. The earth is not going to be able to supply all of our wants and needs we demand, and as a result we will eventually exhaust our most important resources. Even though there are a lot of people aware of this problem most of them choose to ignore it and that is what will cause the major problems we will face in the future.

  11. i don't think that the earth will keep supporting our economy because our population keeps growing and demanding goods that will eventually die out. We take advantage of the earth and continue to ignore the signs that will eventually be unable to sustain us.

  12. Thanks to those of you who have commented on the blog. The topic can be a little depressing, but as you are the future, I wonder what you are prepared to do about it?

  13. I don't think the earth will b able 2 support our global economy much longer. We seem to think that the economy must continue to grow to be sucessful, when really we need to work on how our economy is structured and how it developes. Our demand for the limited resources the Earth is beginning to outstrip the supply and if we dont change our ways we will eventually run out of our resources.
