SS 10: Reminders from Thursday, October 6 2011

Today, after you have finished your test, you will have an opportunity to address our unit one artifact:

Feel free to get up and have a look at it.  Make sure that you name the artifact in your entry and discuss how it would have been important and useful in Canada during the early 1800s.  Your entry will be evaluated on the amount of historical and geographical content to which you can connect the artifact.

Please you make sure to include your first name with your comment (and last initial if you share a name).  The school expectations are a given here, so make sure that your comment is appropriate and that you are a good ambassador.

Good Luck!

  1. The cross-cut saw would have been extremely important in both Canadas in the early 1800's, as all the land was heavily forested (the Boreal Forest covers large portions of Canada). Before a settler could build a house, or make a farm, he would first need a way to cut enough trees so that there was land available. Then, he would use the wood from the trees which he had cut to build his home, so again he would need the saw. He would then need to clear more farmland, which would have been a strenuous but necessary task because most settlers had little money and needed to grow food to either eat or sell.

The saws are used for chopping wood, most of them are 2 person saws where both people hold on each end and pull in a swaying movement.
this tool was important for logging forests.

  3. The artifact is a cross-cut saw. It would have been useful because it could cut down trees for building houses and buildings. It would also help clear property for building houses and such. Without it the pioneers would have had issues cutting down trees to make a living.

  4. Burly loggers living in upper and lower Canada would use the cross-cut saw to mangle trees and such. They could only clear a hectare a year per person but this tool was slow anyways. The wood would mostly be used to build houses and barns but a fair amount was cut with an axe later on and made into firewood. Now days you cold probably make some quick cash if you sold one of these fine saws on ebay.

This crosscut saw is used for falling small trees and cutting firewood.
It would have been handy for clearing small areas of land. It could be used for building project also. Sometimes if there was only one person they would put something springy on the other side and tie it down to replace the other person.

  6. i think ryder's saw is cool and would have been useful for people in the 1800's. it was probably 1 of the tools they used in upper canada to help them clear an average of 1 hectare of forestry a year. they also needed these 2-man saws to get through trees faster and with less physical work then doing it by yourself. they would have used these saw to cut wood for there homes, farms, and just about everything else wood was needed for. the saws main use would have been for quick clearings of forest and then the trees cut down would be used as product for houses and farms and all wooden objects.

  7. The cross-cut saw was useful in the early 1800s to make it easier for cutting and chopping wood and trees, with it's sharp toothed bladed and large handle. Another form of the saw could consist of two handles on either side of the blade, so then two people could cut one tree, which makes cutting trees faster and easier. It could be used for clearing your land and/or clear cutting forests

  8. The cross-cut saw would have been good for clearing out the trees on a plot of land. it would have been fairly easy to operate & would be easier than cutting down trees with an axe. they could also use the fallen trees for houses

  11. This is a cross-cut saw, used in 1800's by many settlers. This saw was very useful because of the heavily forested areas in Canada and the lack of roads. A settler would arrive in Canada to find their land covered in trees, so they only way to build a house would be to chop up all the trees. Having land and farming was also one of the main ways to make a living.

  12. I think that the cross-cut saw would be very useful for clearing brush and trees on the pioneers land.

  15. Saws and similar tools would be a necessity in Upper Canada in the early 1800's, as large tracts of boreal forest would have to be cleared to gain access to usable land. Using the wood and materials gained through clearing the plot, he would build a house (which he would also need the saw for) and then clear out enough land for farming. Although the amount of land that would need to be cleared for a large, productive farm would be large, it would be impossible to live in Upper Canada as a settler without a source of income and food.
