Today students reviewed nouns and completed a worksheet on proper and common nouns. Proper nouns (such as Canada, John, and Divergent) all begin with capital letters. Common nouns (such as, country, man, and book) do not require capital letters.
We then watched the following two links to help introduce the concept of a ballad (a style of poetry).

Students and I then briefly created an opening stanza of a ballad based on Oliver Twist.
Students were then asked to begin writing their own ballad based on an event (historical, personal, fictional, etc...).
Students worked on this until the end of class.
