Students began the class by miming a scene from the novel The Pearl. The rest of the class had to guess which scene had been performed.
Students and I then read some selections from chapter 4. Students were then introduced to two different types of question: recall and respond and critical thinking.
An example of recall and respond might be:
What is the name of Kino and Juana's son?
An example of a critical thinking question might be:
Why might the rich people of La Paz not want poor people to find wealth?
Students were then asked to generate a question of their own from each category.
Students then created a web outlining their own personal identity in their journals.
